Head & Neck Injuries & Treatment

Head and neckTraumatic Head and neck injuries are a serious issue in many sports. There are now established protocols, procedures and mandatory use of personal protective equipment (such as ski and cycling helmets) where risks are high.

Helmets are designed to mitigate against the most serious head and neck injuries such as concussion, fractures, intracranial haemorrhage and dislocations. Any fall or trauma to the head or neck should be taken seriously, and professional medical advice sought.

Many head and neck problems occur over time and are therefore chronic in nature. Chronic conditions affecting the head and neck can be caused by a diversity of factors which, need to be explored. In most presentations, injuries occur as a result of incorrect sporting technique, equipment failure, exposure to cold, overexertion or inadequate pre-sport preparation.

Some of the most common conditions are as follows;

  • Disc injuries
  • Facet joint strain
  • Whiplash injury
  • Arthritis
  • Muscular tension and strain
  • Ligament strain
  • Headaches

Headaches may indicate the presence of underlying pathology and should be properly examined, investigated and diagnosed- these are as follows:

  • Atypical or unusual headache
  • Neck stiffness
  • Neurological symptoms - numbness, weakness of limbs, dizziness, gait disturbance and disorientation
  • Increasing frequency or intensity
  • Sudden on at severe headache
  • Headaches at night or upon rising

Cervicogenic headaches are precipitated by, stress, anxiety and muscle tension affecting the muscles and joints in the shoulder girdle and neck.
